Alongside Google Messages, the Mountain View tech giant is also rolling out gradient icon redesigns to its Phone and Contacts apps. While the existing icons were already easy to recognize, Google seems keen on giving its core apps a flashier look with this update. In a blog post, Google says the new icons are now “sharper and clearer” on your home screen. They are apparently designed based on feedback from users.
Google is rolling out a gradient icon redesign to Phone and Contacts apps as well
The original shapes of these Google communication apps remain as is, so you’ll still be able to easily recognize them despite the redesigned icons. Google says the new icons feature subtle gradients, cleaner edges, and slightly updated shapes and colors to better match the rest of the Google apps.
From the looks of it, the new icons have a sort of pinkish-blue shade. This marks a subtle shift from the current royal/dark blue color scheme. While the existing icons look more minimalist, the new ones appear more vibrant and flashy. It’s worth noting that the functionality of these apps isn’t changing as a result of the new icons. They’re just getting a new, sleeker, more cohesive look on your home screen.
The new icons will roll out in the coming weeks
Besides your home screen, the new icons should also appear on contacts.google.com and messages.google.com/web. This unifies the experience across platforms for users. The change will roll out in the coming weeks via the Play Store. However, there’s no clear timeline mentioned at this time.
For what it’s worth, the new icon for Google Messages is already live with the latest beta version. It’s likely to be the case with other apps as well. We will update once we spot new icons for Contacts and Phone.
