Software engineers at Google now have a new AI-powered tool to boost the user workflows. The thing is, it comes from a direct rival in the segment. After years of insisting that employees stick strictly to in-house models like Gemini, Google is officially letting engineers use Anthropic’s flagship Claude Opus 5 model for internal coding tasks.
According to Business Insider, the decision stems from a desire to prioritize engineering speed over corporate rivalries. While Google has poured billions into building out Gemini, internal developers expressed frustration with the limits of models like 3.8 Flash when compared to specialized coding assistants like Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.
How Google is deploying Claude internally
Google is not giving developers free rein to use outside software everywhere. Access to Anthropic’s Opus 5 remains strictly gated inside “Antigravity”—Google’s internal development platform—and operates under strict per-user quotas.
A Google spokesperson clarified that Gemini remains the company’s primary foundational model for internal work. They described Claude as a supplementary tool for specialized tasks. However, the move mirrors a similar decision made by Amazon earlier this year, where employee feedback prompted leadership to open access to rival AI coding tools.
Fresh AI doom warnings from DeepMind alums
The policy change comes at an intense moment for AI safety discourse. Bilal Chughtai, a former AGI safety researcher who left Google DeepMind, publicly warned that AI development is moving at a reckless pace, cautioning that unchecked progress could pose an existential threat to humanity.
Chughtai’s resignation echoes similar recent warnings from former Anthropic employees and industry scientists like Evan Hubinger and Geoffrey Hinton, who have advocated for international coordination to slow down the frontier AI race. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also recently published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” calling for balanced development speeds.
While researchers debate safety boundaries, tech giants continue balancing fast-paced product development with practical tools. For Google developers, having Anthropic’s best coding model inside Antigravity is a welcome boost to daily productivity.
