If you have been waiting for your car to get a little bit smarter, your dashboard is about to get a major brain transplant. After a long wait following its initial preview back at Google I/O 2025, Gemini AI is finally rolling out to vehicles powered by Android Automotive—the system heavily baked right into the car’s hardware, often called “Google Built-in.”
The rollout seems to be kicking off with existing Volvo models, including the compact EX30 electric SUV, 9to5Google reports. Drivers are waking up to a friendly dashboard pop-up inviting them to “Start using Gemini” as their new co-pilot. If you are a creature of habit, don’t panic just yet; Google lets you dismiss the message and stick with the traditional Google Assistant if you prefer the old-school experience.
A new AI-powered chatty pill on your car dashboard
It is important to distinguish this update from standard Android Auto, which simply mirrors your smartphone onto a screen. This Android Automotive version is hardwired into the vehicle’s internal systems, and the user interface reflects that.
Instead of taking over the whole display, Gemini lives inside a neat little interactive pill on the screen. It features a dedicated “Live” button that you can tap to instantly start a fluid, back-and-forth chat without shouting a wake word every five seconds.
Depending on how much access your car manufacturer grants the software, Gemini can handle serious heavy lifting. You can tell it to adjust the dual-zone climate controls, activate your heated seats, or toggle the windshield wipers when a sudden storm hits.
The death of rigid commands
The real upgrade here is how human the conversation feels. The classic Google Assistant can be incredibly stubborn, requiring you to memorize exact phrases to get anything done. If you want the fans blowing hard, you have to say something rigid like, “Set climate control to level 5.”
Gemini, on the other hand, brings actual common sense to the driver’s seat. If you say something wildly exaggerated like, “Blast the air conditioning to 100%,” the AI actually interprets your human intent, cranking up the fan speed and lowering the temperature immediately. It adapts to the way you naturally talk rather than forcing you to speak like a computer programmer.
Volvo owners are the first to test drive this dashboard upgrade. However, you can expect a wave of other car manufacturers to push out the software update to their compatible fleets over the coming weeks.
