Social media can turn minor corporate adjustments into major panic in record time. Over the past few days, viral posts suggested that Google Taiwan was quietly executing massive layoffs. Some rumors even claimed the company planned to slash 30% to 50% of its local workforce. The most affected departments would be consumer electronics departments, and fire high-level executives.
However, Google quickly stepped in to set the record straight. As reported by ChainCatcher, the search giant officially denied claims of widespread downsizing (via Taipei Times). They clarified that while organizational tweaks are happening, the extreme numbers circulating online are completely false.
Routine adjustments vs. social media hype
Speculation focused heavily on Google’s hardware research and development hub at the Taipei Far Eastern Telecom Park in New Taipei City’s Banqiao District. The facility serves as Google’s largest hardware engineering center outside the United States. So, rumors about consumer electronics teams taking a hit gained rapid traction.
Addressing the chatter, Google explained that it is making ongoing operational adjustments to reduce management layers, improve efficiency, and focus resources on long-term priorities. Rather than shutting down operations, the company’s official careers portal actively lists 49 open positions in Banqiao and 32 in Taipei across various teams.
Ramping up AI investments in Taiwan
Far from backing out of the region, Google is actually expanding its footprint in key growth areas. During a media session following his speech at the Semicon Taiwan trade show in Taipei, Amin Vahdat, Google’s Senior Vice President and Chief Technologist for AI and Infrastructure, highlighted Taiwan’s growing importance in the company’s global strategy.
Google plans to expand its AI infrastructure R&D center in Taipei’s Shilin District, increasing its office space there by 60%. Google’s long-term commitment to Taiwan is still very much alive and well, with local hardware partners taking on an expanded role in the buildout of next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Routine team restructurings will likely continue as tech priorities shift, but claims of a massive exit do not match reality.
