Google announced that it’s combining Genie with Google Street View. In other words, Genie’s generative power is getting combined with real-world imagery from Google Street View.
Google just combined Genie with Street View
The company says that this will help AI models to “anchor themselves in reality.” The expansion of Genie’s power can provide a virtual environment for AI agents or robots so that they can “navigate and interact with the complexities of the real world.”
Genie, as many of you know, is Google’s general-purpose world model that can generate diverse, interactive environments. Combining it with Google Street View is definitely expanding its capabilities by quite a bit.
Google did note that this new Street View capability within Project Genie is an experimental prototype at the moment. So keep that in mind. You’ll be able to use leverage real-world imagery in order to explore your favorite spots or reimagine them.
It’s limited to US locations at the moment
How does it work? Well, all you have to do is tap the Maps pin to choose a place in the US and optionally select a style for your world. For example, you can choose “Stone Age.” Then, you need to describe your character, your favorite book hero, for example.
Based on that, Genie will create an imaginative world with its starting location tied to Street View’s real-world imagery. Google also noted that the capability is powered by Maps Imagery Grounding, the same tech that developers use to create AI visuals with Street View.
Google said that Street View Imagery in Project Genie is now availbalef or places in the US. However, Google is planning to expand this capability elsewhere… over time.
The company said that this feature is gradually rolling out to all eligible Google AI Ultra $200 subscribers globally. All of this was announced at Google I/O 2026.
