Online deep research often leads to the dreaded “tab-hopping.” You start with a simple search, open five different links, and suddenly find yourself lost in a sea of open windows, losing the original context of your query. Google is finally addressing this friction with a major update to its AI Mode in Chrome, designed to keep your focus exactly where it needs to be.
How Chrome’s AI Mode side-by-side AI Mode ends search frustration
The key of this update is the introduction of a side-by-side viewing experience. Previously, clicking a link within AI Mode on the desktop version of Chrome would often take you away from the conversational interface. Now, as Google confirmed in a recent announcement, clicking a link opens the destination webpage in a dedicated side panel next to the AI chat.
This layout allows you to interact with a live website while simultaneously asking the AI specific questions about its content. For example, if you are looking at a complex technical article or a long retailer page for a coffee maker, you can ask the AI to “summarize the cleaning process” or “check for specific compatibility” without ever leaving the page. According to Google, this ensures users maintain context throughout their entire journey.
Searching across your ecosystem
The company is also introducing a powerful new way to leverage the information you already have open. A new “plus” (+) menu is rolling out for both desktop and mobile versions of Chrome. This tool allows you to select existing open tabs, images, or even PDF files and include them directly as context for your AI search.
Instead of copying and pasting text from various sources, you can now “summon” those tabs into a single conversation. For someone studying for an exam, this means mixing class notes, lecture slides, and academic papers into one query to find connections between them.
Availability and creative tools
Beyond research, the update integrates creative features to make them more accessible. You can use options like Canvas and image generation on any Chrome surface where the new plus menu appears. This makes the AI tools feel like a native part of the browsing experience.
As of today, these updates are live for users in the United States, with a global rollout expected soon.
