The Gaming Copilot is being removed from the Xbox platform after launching less than a year ago. It’s the latest move from new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who has said that Xbox needs to and will return to form. The past few years have been a little rough for Xbox as a platform, with several key decisions causing gamers to ask “why?” Among those decisions was the introduction of AI tools in an area where the majority of people who interact with this medium are simply not fond of AI in any capacity.
First was the introduction of an AI chatbot back in 2024, and then the ‘Copilot for Gaming’ that Microsoft announced and launched in 2025. The overall idea of what the gaming Copilot was supposed to provide made sense. One such skill was to be able to help players get pas difficult bosses, stages, or encounters. Essentially it could act as a means for guiding the player. It would be able to give contextual advice and responses based on your questions and do so by knowing what you’re currently playing.
The thing is, players can already find information like this on their own. By doing their own research, without the inaccuracies that AI often provides. Simply put, no one asked for the gaming Copilot on Xbox and the majority of Xbox fans didn’t want it. Fast forward to May 6, 2026, and fans can close the door on this one.
The Gaming Copilot is being removed from consoles and the mobile app
While the Copilot isn’t disappearing in a puff of smoke immediately, it’s seemingly not sticking around for long. Sharma has announced on her X account that the Xbox team will be winding down the Copilot feature on the Xbox mobile app and that development for consoles is stopping completely. Sharma admits that this feature is one that doesn’t align with where Xbox is headed, and so Xbox is going to drop the feature. “As part of this shift, you’ll see us begin to retire features that don’t align with where we’re headed,” Sharma said.
This statement confirms that Xbox is looking to retire other features as well if they don’t align with the direction. It’s unclear what other features will be retired, though.
