Talking to a smart speaker often feels like a rigid back-and-forth. That is, you say the wake word, ask a question, get an answer, and the cycle ends. If you need to ask something else, you start from scratch. However, Google is changing this dynamic by bringing Continued Conversation to Gemini for Home.
Gemini for Home’s Continued Conversations upgrade brings a more natural experience
Gemini for Home’s Continued Conversation mechanics are simple yet effective. After making an initial request using the “Hey Google” command, the microphone on your Nest device or smart display will remain active for a few additional seconds. You will know the assistant is waiting thanks to the pulsing lights on the hardware. During this brief window, you can add follow-up questions or additional commands without needing to repeat the wake word.
What truly sets this implementation apart from previous systems is how it manages context. Google explains that Gemini can now “remember” the thread of the conversation. For example, if you ask about the weather in a specific city and then simply add “How about tomorrow?” the system understands you are still referring to the same location.
Better integration for the smart home
One of the biggest challenges of keeping a microphone open is background noise or conversations between people in the same room on your home. To address this, Google integrated improved “side-talk” detection. The goal is for the AI to distinguish between a direct instruction and everyday household chatter, reducing accidental activations.
Furthermore, unlike older, more limited versions of Google Assistant, this Gemini update is a global release. It is available across all supported languages and regions—not just U.S. English. Once enabled, the feature is accessible to everyone in the household, including guests.
How to enable Continued Conversation on Gemini for Home
It’s noteworthy that this feature is not “on” by default. To enable it, users must open the Google Home app, go to Home Settings, select Gemini for Home voice assistant, and toggle on Continued Conversation.
This update joins other recent improvements where Gemini gained the ability to manage complex task lists and better integrate with music services.
