Let’s face it, software updates aren’t always perfect. More often than not, they usually come accompanied by a bunch of bugs. But when these bugs break the functionality of the device, that’s when it gets really annoying. And that’s something Garmin users are dealing with, where the latest update is causing issues with the smartwatch.
Garmin update causes issues with smartwatch
In a post on Reddit, a user is complaining about the 27.09 firmware update that was released a few months ago. It turns out that the update has caused issues with the user’s Garmin smartwatch, messing up the core functionality of the device.
According to the user, “My HR data is completely messed up, but the worse thing is happening with elevation data. My completely flat neighborhood 10k now claims I climbed a mountain. It looks like watch stopped to compensate the temperature data to calculate elevation – which worked in previous firmware fine, but now suddenly I cannot just go outside and start activity in the colder environment – I need to spend at least 20min outside to make my watch get colder.”
The user also adds, “The watch is basically a random number generator at this point. How are we supposed to trust our training load, VO2 max, or recovery metrics when the base data is this corrupted?”
Is Garmin aware?
To make matters worse, the user claims that Garmin is aware of the update causing issues to the smartwatch. This is because Garmin later released the 27.10 firmware update for the Forerunner 165 model, apparently fixing the exact issue they are dealing with: “So they know about the problem. They literally have the rollback ready. Yet those of us who spent premium money on the 255/265 and 900 series are just left in the dark for months with useless stats. No timeline, no communication, no hotfix for the higher tier watches. Just crickets.”
The user also points out how Garmin seems to be gaslighting customers, claiming that it’s their fault or they’re not using or understanding the feature correctly. That said, some users who have the 27.09 update have no issues, while others are in complete agreement. It’s hard to say what’s wrong at this point in time, but hopefully Garmin addresses it soon.
