First information about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 has just surfaced. A tipster, kro, said that the Galaxy Z Fold 9 is in development, while sharing some details about it already.
The Galaxy Z Fold 9 could be just 7.9mm when folded
He claims that the phone will be positioned as a direct competitor to the iPhone Duo, which is logical. He also says that the target thickness when the device is folded is 7.9mm, while Samsung is aiming for 3.9mm thickness when it’s unfolded.
That, quite honestly, sounds unreal. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is already plenty thin at 9.7mm when folded, and miles ahead of the iPhone Duo, which is 11.3mm thick when folded. The phone is also a lot lighter at 201 grams compared to 254 grams of Apple’s foldable.
If Samsung manages to reach that 7.9mm thickness goal, that would be outstanding, of course. It would also mark a huge change even compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
UDC could make a comeback
That’s not all, though. The tipster also claims that Samsung is considering an under-display camera (UDC) for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. He also said the following: “I’ve heard that it may already be confirmed.”
We’re guessing that he’s referring to the under-display camera for the main display, similar to what the iPhone Duo has done and to what Samsung has been doing on some previous Galaxy Z Fold series models.
The tipster did say, in the end, that “we’ll have to wait for more solid information before drawing any conclusions.” In other words, take what was said here with a grain of salt, as nothing seems to be set in stone just yet.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 is expected to see the light of day in July 2027, if the company ends up sticking to its release cycle. That’s a long way from now; the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is still a new phone.
