Some users have noticed that their Galaxy Z Fold 8 hinge may move slightly when the device is closed. In fact, @technicallytee has mentioned this on X a few times with the unit he purchased.
Basically, when the device is closed, you may see the two halves move a tiny amount in opposite directions. This can be worrying, since this is a nearly $2,000 phone (in fact, it’s over that if you upgraded to 512GB and include taxes), but it’s completely normal.
Essentially, the two halves are connected by a complicated mechanical hinge. Like with other mechanical parts, the components inside the hinge need extremely small amounts of clearance so they can move freely instead of rubbing or binding against each other. That tiny clearance can result in a small amount of play between the two sides of the phone.
Manufacturing tolerances can also play a role, as tiny differences between individual hinge components mean movement can vary from one Galaxy Z Fold 8 to another.
When should you take your Galaxy Z Fold 8 to Samsung?
If you notice the movement gets excessive and worse over time, or comes with grinding, clicking, misalignment, or problems opening or closing the phone, then you’ll want Samsung to take a look.
Until then, your Galaxy Z Fold 8 should continue to operate as normal. For what it’s worth, my unit, which I picked up in London immediately after unpacking, has very slight movement in the hinge. This is after using it for a solid month too. So I’m not too worried about it getting worse.
While this is unsettling, keep in mind that Samsung’s foldables are some of the most durable foldables on the market today. So while Samsung tells you to be gentle with it, that’s not necessary, though the new Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold is apparently more durable.
