Samsung could face fines fines that are equal to up to $48 million for issues that date back to its Galaxy S22 devices, thanks to a lawsuit filed against the company for its GOS (Game Optimization Services) practices.
When the Galaxy S22 was a current device, customers who had purchased it had noticed a decrease in performance on the device after sustained use of a high amount of resources, such as when playing high-end mobile games. It was then discovered that Samsung was throttling the performance of the Xclipse 920 GPU that handled the graphics processing for the Exynos 2200 chipset. This led to the lawsuit from around 1,800 Galaxy S22 users in South Korea filing the class-action lawsuit against the company for these practices, claiming that Samsung had falsely advertised the phone’s peak performance, as it was being decreased by more than half.
The company argued that its methods of handling optimization were within industry standards and that this practice was industry-wide.
Samsung may have to pay fines related to its GOS practices following an October deliberation
Samsung has already reportedly been determined to have engaged in deceptive practices according to the Korean FTC, and will now have to wait for the regulator to make final decisions. The Korean FTC is said to be deliberating on the case on October 14 of this year, where it will decide if Samsung will have to pay fines for the GOS issue, and what those fines will be.
Samsung could end up having to may as much as 64.36 billion Korean Won, which is around $48 million. The minimum amount could be as low as 32.18 Billion Korean Won or $24 million.
