Sleep apnea detection is being brought over to the Samsung Galaxy Ring and at least two of Samsung’s smartwatches in the Galaxy Watch lineup. This is an improved version of the feature that is not currently available on anything Samsung offers. However, there is an older sleep apnea detection feature available for the Galaxy Ring right now, as well as several Galaxy Watch models, with FDA-approval of said feature being confirmed for US consumers earlier this year.
The new and improved feature will be able to better detect sleep apnea by looking at multiple points of data instead of just looking for the absence or presence of signs that might indicate someone has the condition. With the new version, sleep apnea detection will be powered up by AI so it can analyze things like breathing data. If it finds anything, it’ll assign any of the disturbances into one of three different tiers, which are mild, occasional, and frequent.
Improved sleep apnea detection will hit the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 first, starting with South Korea
According to Samsung, the new and improved sleep apnea feature will be coming to the Galaxy Ring and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 before other devices. It will also start in South Korea, because so far, South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is the only regulator that has approved the new version for use on these devices. Since the older version is available for users in the US, this new version should end up on devices outside of South Korea at some point.
Samsung also confirms that more devices will be getting the new version, swapping out the old one for one that is being presented as more accurate. Devices that will get the new version include the Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, Galaxy Watch Ultra, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025 model. Samsung doesn’t mention anything about timing for these older devices, though.
