We are already in the second week of a legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI in Oakland. A recent testimony coming out of the courtroom is painting a very different picture of the AI-focused company’s success story. While the world saw the launch of ChatGPT as a massive victory, former executive Mira Murati’s testimony in the Elon Musk vs. OpenAI trial reflects a Sam Altman leadership defined by distrust and “chaos.”
“Creating Chaos”: Mira Murati’s bombshell testimony against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in trial vs. Elon Musk
The claims come from former technology chief Mira Murati. She briefly took the reins as CEO after the board temporarily replaced Sam Altman in 2023. According to Reuters, Murati accused Altman of being dishonest and of encouraging infighting among senior staff.
She noted that Altman would frequently tell one person one thing and the complete opposite to another. This allegedly led to executives pitting themselves against each other. This environment, she claimed, put OpenAI at a “catastrophic risk” of falling apart entirely. Interestingly, while Murati acknowledged the instability Altman caused, she originally wanted him to remain CEO to prevent a total implosion of the organization.
Concerns over ChatGPT’s debut
The trial also shed light on the moments leading up to ChatGPT’s blockbuster release. Shivon Zilis, a former board member who now works at Musk’s Neuralink, testified that the board felt “extreme concern” regarding how the chatbot was deployed. In particular, she said the launch was done without proper communication with the board.
This testimony supports Musk’s broader argument of OpenAI shifting from a charitable nonprofit to a purely commercial entity without following its original mission. Musk, a co-founder who provided much of the early funding, is seeking $150 billion in damages. He wants the court to force the company to revert to its nonprofit status, calling the transition a “bait-and-switch.”
What’s at stake
The outcome of this trial could have a massive impact on AI. Right now, OpenAI is the big dog in the industry. Its tech is in schools, governments, and big businesses. If Musk succeeds, it could slow down the commercial ambitions of one of his biggest competitors.
