Five years after their launch, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 are seeing an end to their software support. This comes as the South Korean tech giant launched its eighth generation of foldables back in July. While the foldables will continue to function as is, they’ll no longer get any major updates, including security fixes.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 software support comes to an end
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 debuted in 2021 and received four years of major updates and five years of security patches. They debuted with Android 11 with One UI 3 and received Android 15 as their final OS upgrade in 2025. They weren’t updated to Android 16. Both phones have received only security updates. After a good long run, they are now finally no longer eligible for any updates.
Well, the move isn’t very surprising. Before Samsung moved to seven years of OS updates in 2024 for its flagship phones, Galaxy devices received a maximum of five years of software support. So this was coming.
Now is the time to upgrade
Going forward, Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 users who want to keep their devices safe against the latest vulnerabilities and security issues should consider upgrading to a newer model. Samsung foldables have come a long way in terms of both design and durability since the Z Fold/Flip 3. There’s also the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has a new, wider, and shorter form factor. That is, if you want to have the same foldable form factor.
That said, it’s worth noting that none of the new foldables support the S Pen functionality. If you don’t want to upgrade, you can keep using the device as is. But as said, we will miss out on the latest innovation as well as software features.
