These days, anything you post on the internet will stay there in some form or the other. It’s almost always impossible to delete something once it’s been put out there. This is a lesson that Elon Musk is learning, where his tweets are being used against him in court.
Elon Musk tweets used against him in court
During his ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI, Elon Musk had to testify in court, and during that time, some of his tweets came back to haunt him. For starters, during cross-examination, Musk was asked about Tesla’s AI ambitions. According to Musk, he told the court that Tesla is not pursuing AGI right now.
Sounds normal, right? Until you realize that it was only just last month that Musk made a post on X saying otherwise. According to his tweet, “Tesla will be one of the companies to make AGI and probably the first to make it in humanoid/atom-shaping form.”
He was also asked about his $100 million investment in OpenAI claim. Musk said, “I’m still confused as to how a nonprofit to which I donated ~$100M somehow became a $30B market cap for-profit. If this is legal, why doesn’t everyone do it?” However, the reality is that only about $38 million exchanged hands. According to the Tesla CEO, he says his “reputation and network” made up for the difference.
Musk versus OpenAI lawsuit
For those unfamiliar, Musk and OpenAI are currently in a legal battle against each other. If you didn’t know, Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI and an early backer. However, he later left the board over a disagreement about leadership, eventually leading him to form his own AI company, xAI (which created Grok).
The reason Musk took OpenAI to court was due to the company’s transition from non-profit to for-profit. According to Musk’s attorneys, they’re framing it as a “stolen charity.” He also claims that he played a pivotal role in forming the company and would not have invested as much had he known the intention was to make profit.
Now Musk is seeking $150 billion in damages and to force OpenAI to return to non-profit status. He is also asking that Sam Altman, OpenAI’s current CEO, and co-founder Greg Brockman be removed from leadership.
