As we’ve repeated ad nauseam, the egg-shaped EQ EVs Mercedes tried to sell have been flops, and the next generation of all-electric luxury vehicles needs to look good. The Autoblog spies have recently captured the new E-Class EV undergoing testing near the Nürburgring, spotting the production lighting units for the first time, and while the images reveal quite a bit, we won’t have to theorize too much because insiders indicate that the Mercedes-Benz E-Class EQ will arrive at dealerships, including in the U.S., in 2027, a year earlier than originally planned. Let’s see what we can expect.

Expected to arrive for the 2028 model year, the new E-Class EV will bridge the old and the new. At the front, three-pointed star motifs appear as daytime running lights, while the clusters themselves appear to be longer and more defined than those on the C-Class. We can also make out openings for a lower intake, plus side scoops that will undoubtedly help cool the brakes. There are also sinuous, angular lines on the hood, but we can’t read too much into these because the doors also have cladding beneath the vinyl camouflage, hiding the true curves and shapes of the body. What we can confirm is the presence of a panoramic glass roof and physical door handles.

Further back, the trunk is smoothly integrated with a subtle lip spoiler, below which we can see the stretched taillights. Unlike the headlights, these do not appear to have any star-shaped motifs, bucking the trend, and the design seems slightly reminiscent of those on the classic W123 E-Class. Overall, it’s a pretty elegant design, and it’s probably safe to say that this will look better than Bavaria’s alternative, the BMW i5. Another thing these images reveal is that, like the existing E-Class, the electric version will have rear-axle steering to help maneuver the hefty sedan. That brings us to the underpinnings.

The 2028 Mercedes-Benz E-Class EV will be underpinned by the MB.EA-M architecture for midsize vehicles, effectively replacing the unpopular EQE. Up to 621 miles of range is expected to be possible on the WLTP cycle, thanks to lithium-ion batteries. This sort of range will likely apply to rear-wheel-drive single-motor variants, while 4MATIC AWD versions with a dual-motor powertrain will provide more power and all-weather capability. An AMG model has also been spied this year, and this could produce as much as 900 horsepower. With development progressing steadily, Stuttgart may provide some information before the end of the year, but the launch will happen sometime in 2027.
