The L83 arrived in 2014 as General Motors’ workhorse EcoTec3 5.3L V8, promising more power and better fuel economy than the older versions of the 5.3-liter that was used in the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon and other select GM full-size truck and SUV models. Direct injection, higher compression, variable valve timing, and Active Fuel Management were sold as the pathway to higher horsepower and better highway fuel economy for our favorite full-size SUV, the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon twins.
