A decade-long cryptocurrency nightmare recently turned into one of the internet’s most surprising success stories. An X/Twitter user known as “Cprkrn” recovered 5 Bitcoin—worth nearly $400,000 today—after being locked out for 11 years, and all thanks to Anthropic’s Claude AI.
A forgotten college-era secret
The story began back in the user’s college days when they purchased 5 BTC for around $250 each. The trouble started after the user changed the wallet password while intoxicated and promptly forgot the new credentials. The user spent years trying to access it using professional brute-force software like Hashcat and BTCRecover. However, sadly, nothing worked.
The breakthrough finally happened when the user decided to upload files from an old college computer into Anthropic’s Claude AI. Rather than trying to “crack” the encryption, Claude helped organize and analyze years of forgotten data, backups, and timestamps.
How Claude AI helped recover the 5 Bitcoin
Claude’s true value wasn’t in bypassing security but in its ability to spot patterns. Apparently, the AI identified an older wallet.dat file that existed before the password was ever changed.
The user also discovered a mnemonic recovery phrase in an old notebook. Claude combined this phrase with the specific wallet version it identified and returned an output. This way, the user was able to decrypt the file and move the funds, which had been sitting untouched since 2015. While some Reddit skeptics argued that the AI ”just searched files,” Decrypt experts said that Claude’s role was more like forensics sorting. After all, the AI handled massive amounts of historical data that a human might overlook.
A reminder for the rest of us
Scenarios like these are more common than you think. Millions of Bitcoins are currently “lost” in old hard drives and forgotten wallets, for one reason or another. While AI tools like Claude are becoming useful for narrowing down searches and identifying recovery clues, they still require original files or mnemonic phrases to work. Sadly, not even the power of AI has been able to help in all situations due to lack of information.
As Cprkrn’s 11-year struggle shows, it is much better to back up your recovery phrases securely than to rely on a “leap of faith” with an AI assistant a decade later.
