If you think the public excitement around artificial intelligence has cooled off lately, you’re not imagining it. From college graduates booing mentions of the tech during commencement ceremonies to the Pope voicing concerns about public safety and economic inequality, the initial euphoria surrounding large language models has clearly sobered up. Yet, a massive divide is emerging between what people say about AI and how they actually use it. OpenAI‘s ChatGPT officially crossed one billion global monthly active app users in May.
A record-breaking milestone
The latest estimates come from the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. Reaching this figure just about three and a half years after its late 2022 debut makes ChatGPT the fastest application in history to hit the milestone. For context, it managed to sprint past the adoption timelines of massive digital staples like TikTok, Instagram, and even Google Maps, which took roughly five years to secure the same volume of active users.
In raw numbers, ChatGPT is the runaway leader, but the competition is fierce. Google’s Gemini, ByteDance’s Doubao and Anthropic‘s Claude are all rapidly gaining ground. ChatGPT saw a healthy 62% year-over-year user growth, but Claude achieved a 640% monthly usage jump, now having 56 million active app users (via CNBC).
The ethics of app switching
Interestingly, a large chunk of that growth appears to be driven by ethical considerations and corporate decisions. Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Abe Yousef highlighted OpenAI’s February deal with the Pentagon as a key moment for user sentiment. The day after the announcement, ChatGPT uninstalls suddenly spiked by 295%.
That very same weekend, Claude shot up to the top spot in the App Store. The AI chatbot outperformed ChatGPT in US downloads for the first time after Anthropic publicly refused to take part in military operations. Sensor Tower also tracked that US users who downloaded Claude early this year ended up spending 5% less time on ChatGPT just a month later.
An unstoppable trajectory
Despite these brief shifts in platform loyalty and growing hesitation among everyday workers regarding privacy or environmental costs, experts do not expect the overall momentum of AI adoption to stall anytime soon. A survey of 12,000 frontline workers conducted by the Boston Consulting Group found that 74% routinely use AI into their routines. This represents a 23% jump compared to last year. Many of them even claimed the technology saves them an entire workday each week.
The United Nations estimates that the expanding AI market could balloon to over $4.8 trillion by 2033. Meanwhile, both major players are officially racing toward Wall Street. Anthropic and OpenAI have recently initiated confidential filings for highly anticipated public listings stateside. Ultimately, while public skepticism toward the technology is undeniably real, global consumers still rely on these tools more than ever before.
