Bouncing between different tabs in the same desktop app gets annoying fast when you are just trying to complete a project. OpenAI is finally tackling that interface clutter by merging the Chat and Work tabs into a single unified, AI-powered space. The upcoming update will let users jump from spitting out quick ideas to finishing complex tasks without ever switching screens.
The current ChatGPT desktop app splits work between simple conversational answers in Chat and heavier document building inside the Work tab. According to an email sent to subscribers and first reported by TechCrunch, OpenAI plans to test this unified view with a small group of users before rolling it out to everyone. Bringing advanced project tools directly into standard conversations mirrors a similar interface redesign launched by rival Anthropic for Claude a few months back.
Shared token pools and subscription usage
Beside the cleaner interface layout, OpenAI is also tweaking how paid accounts handle monthly resource limits. Starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers will draw from one shared token pool across ChatGPT and Codex. Updated information on OpenAI’s support page notes that basic instant chats will not pull from this combined monthly allowance.
While the coding-focused Codex tool stays in its own separate app section, its resource usage will link straight to your main subscription allowance. Power users running long code scripts while analyzing massive files might notice their monthly limits resetting a bit faster than usual. Still, OpenAI expects most everyday users to navigate the transition without running into strict usage caps.
Unified workspace and wider rollout plans
Combining these tools lets users upload files and connect plugins without jumping into specialized project tabs first. Having smart agentic capabilities ready inside standard chats makes complex automation feel much more natural for everyday tasks. Subscribers can keep tabs on their combined token usage and reset countdowns right inside their account settings panel.
Fusing daily chat with heavier project tools marks a smart shift toward cleaner and less frustrating software design. OpenAI is testing the unified layout with a smaller group of feedback users to fix any navigation bugs before it goes out to everyone.
