Long-awaited chat themes are finally available on the Google Messages app. The themes add a new way to make conversations look more personal and customized. The feature allows users to change chat colors and wallpapers for individual conversations. However, it only works on RCS chats are designed to change only how a conversation looks on the user’s device, not on the recipient’s.
Google Messages gets chat themes and custom backgrounds feature
After weeks of testing, Google has finally begun rolling out Chat Themes and custom background support for its Messages app. With Chat Themes, users can change the bubble accent color and wallpaper for individual conversations. Users can choose from curated design options that include categories such as Animals, Landscapes, and Space. Moreover, users can also choose their custom images as a background.
Once a user selects a custom wallpaper, the app will automatically adjust the message bubbles to fit the new look. Further, users are not locked into the first color combination they see. Users can manually change the color palette. A theme is visible only to the person who sets it, so changing the background or colors does not alter what the other person or members of a group chat see on their devices.
Google has made it easier to set up chat themes
Setting up chat themes is fairly easy in Google Messages. To set it, open any conversation, then tap the recipient or group name at the top. Users can also open the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Chat Theme. From there, pick a color, choose a preset wallpaper or upload a photo, then tap Next to preview the result before selecting Apply. There is also a Reset to default option.
As for the release, the tech giant is rolling out the feature in phases. Not every Android phone has received the update with the newest customization option. However, all the eligible devices should get it in the coming weeks.
