One of Spotify’s features is the social aspect of the streaming platform. Basically, you can add friends, message each other, and share songs. This is more efficient than, say, copying the link and pasting it in a messenger app. However, there’s a weird Spotify bug going on right now that prevents users from following and blocking each other.

So what’s actually happening with this Spotify bug? According to reports on Spotify’s community forums, the follow button doesn’t do what it says. One user described tapping “Follow” and watching the button switch to “Following.” The follower count stays frozen though, and refreshing the page flips it right back to “Follow.” Block and unblock aren’t working either. Trying either one gets you an error message that reads, “Something went wrong. Please try again later” instead.
This issue seems to have started quite recently. From what we can tell, reports started rolling in around September 16. It also does not appear to be tied to one platform. Users on the iPhone, Android, and desktop have all chimed in with the same complaint. Some tried clearing their cache. Others reinstalled the app or switched devices entirely. Nothing worked. If you’ve tried to follow or block someone on Spotify this week and you’re having issues, you’re not alone.
Aware of the issue
The good news is Spotify already knows about the following blocking bug. A moderator jumped into the community thread and confirmed the team is looking into it. However, there’s no word yet on when it’ll actually get fixed.
According to the post, “We did some digging and our folks backstage seem to be aware of this issue. Although we can’t provide you with an immediate timeframe in which it is going to get addressed, rest assured it is on our radar.”
Spotify’s asking anyone affected to send over a few details. That means your device model, your OS version, and which Spotify app version you’re running. They also want to know roughly when the problem started for you. Did it line up with an app or OS update? Presumably that will help the team trace what’s actually broken.
