No Shortage of Options
As it is, the BMW X5 has five powertrain options. There’s the gas engine, the diesel, the plug-in hybrid, the full electric, and soon, the hydrogen. You’re practically spoiled for choice in choosing what powers the X5, and BMW is ensuring that there is an option for just about everyone.
The G65 X5 has perhaps the widest array of powertrain options among its peers, and that’s something that BMW can boast. But if that’s still not enough, there will be a sixth option on the way.
The Sixth Option
Late last year, it was reported that BMW may be considering putting range extenders in its EVs. At the time, it was said that the iX5 and i7 could be getting that treatment soon. Given their sizes, both are prime candidates, as they can accommodate the relatively bulky arrangement.
Now, it’s been reported by Chinese auto website Autohome that the range-extended iX5 may be coming soon. Details are still relatively thin, although the publication claims that it’ll be expected by 2028. It also said that the B48 2.0-liter turbo could be the engine that powers the vehicle’s generators.
Backtracking?
If this report is true, there’s a bit of irony going on there. Just a few months ago, BMW said it doesn’t need range extenders for its EVs. The German automaker argued that it has a range of plug-in hybrid vehicles in its lineup. At the same time, it expressed confidence in its current battery technology as seen in the iX3. The iX3 can get up to 434 miles on a full charge, according to EPA ratings. That said, real-world tests have yielded even better results, with one getting 485 miles from a full charge.
Still, it would seem that BMW sees potential in range extenders. The Chinese practically own that space, as nearly every EV it makes has an accompanying range-extended version. Nissan has its proprietary e-Power technology that’s been well received in Europe and Asia, while Stellantis will soon roll out the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV.
Here’s the kicker, though. Autohome reports that the range-extended iX5 will be a China-market exclusive. By the looks of it, there are no plans to export it to other markets in the near future. That said, if the reception is positive enough, there may be a chance other countries will get it.
