The Best Modern-Day M5?
BMW has made many great M5S over the years, all of which have become deserving of iconic status. Each classic model was special in its own way. The E28 was the first, the E34 was a true sleeper, the E39 is the universal favorite, while the E60 had that glorious V10.
That’s not to say modern-era M5S aren’t as good, and that’s far from the truth. But among all the models from the last 15 years, the G90 M5 CS is perhaps one of the best iterations of the car in the last two decades. Stiffened, lightened, and made more powerful, it was less of a sport sedan and more of a supercar that happened to have four doors.
A Certain Shade of Green
When you picture the M5 CS, chances are, you’re imagining it in green. More precisely, it’s Frozen Deep Green, the one shown in all press materials. It’s the car’s push color, and it suits the car very well. Besides, not everything has to be black, white, or grey.
BMW made just 1,132 M5 CS models, and it was produced from March 2021 to January 2022. It was a short but sweet run, but it had to make way for the anything-but- lightweight G90 M5. Spotting one is rare, and seeing one that isn’t draped in Frozen Deep Green is even rarer.
Stats to Please the BMW Geeks
According to data compiled by M Data Works, of the 1,132 built, a whopping 570 were draped in its image color. That represents 50.4% of all CS models made, most of which ended up in the U.S. In a distant second was Brands Hatch Grey with 386 cars, or 25.3%, while third was Frozen Brands Hatch Grey with 276 cars, or 24.3%.
We were honestly hoping one or two Individual models would come in a different color. Sadly, none of those who bought a CS brand new went for a custom color. But while an overwhelming majority of customers chose matte green, the stats get more interesting when you break it down by country.
In some markets, Brands Hatch Grey was the most popular color, and some countries sold only one or two in Frozen Deep Green. Most notably, Japan only has two in that color, while Spain has just one, so if you see an M5 CS over there in green, you just saw a unicorn. Another interesting stat: over half of CS buyers opted for the track tires, and most went with the red brake calipers. But no matter what combination you spot, any sighting of an M5 CS will always count as a treat.
