
For those of you who are subscribed to AT&T’s prepaid plans, here’s something you’ll want to take note of. The carrier has announced that it will introduce a new fee for its prepaid plans as part of an “AT&T Administrative & Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee.”
AT&T introduces new fee to prepaid plans
Prior to this, AT&T had introduced a similar fee for postpaid users. This came in the form of an extra $3.99 per line per month. However, the good news is that for prepaid users, this new fee AT&T is introducing is slightly cheaper at $2.63 per service payment. It is expected to come into effect on June 22 next month.
That being said, there is a bit of confusion regarding this fee and how it will be charged to customers. This is because some customers might be subscribed on a month-to-month basis. Some might have opted for 3 months at a time, or some might have gone with AT&T’s annual plan, which is the cheapest.
Does this mean that these fees are charged as one lump sum? That’s the part AT&T doesn’t seem to have mentioned on its website. However, it’s probably safe to assume that they will, but it would be nice to have it clarified anyway.
What this means for prepaid users
One of the benefits of buying a prepaid plan is that it’s generally much simpler in terms of what you’re paying for. A carrier like AT&T offers a prepaid plan; what you pay for that month or that year is really the end of the story. Postpaid plans get more complicated because sometimes they have hidden fees. Also, depending on how you use your phone, you might get a higher bill the following month.
However, with AT&T introducing this new “cost recovery fee,” prepaid plans are becoming more expensive. For example, at $2.63 per service payment, that amounts to $31.56 a year. And that’s for a single line. What if your entire family of four or five were all on prepaid accounts? That adds up pretty quick.
In any case, it’s something you might want to think about if you plan to subscribe or renew your subscription.
