Earlier this week, Apple announced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, after years of leaks. After announcing the new foldable, Apple’s new CEO John Ternus and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak sat down with Tom’s Guide to talk about the new foldable.
When asked why they weren’t first with folding phones, Ternus said, “I think for us, it’s always about when do we feel like we have a product idea that meets our bar for quality and durability but also design?” Continuing by saying, “What I think is particularly amazing about the Duo is that it’s such a good example of hardware and software coming together to make something really special.”
Ternus was also asked about the currently available foldable phones from some Android competitors, to which Ternus replied, “I think what you’ve seen out there are all these just kind of cheap-feeling plastic surfaces that don’t feel good to the touch. They’re kind of wavy, wrinkly, and the nano texture just wipes that all out. It’s beautifully flat. It feels amazing to touch, and it’s incredibly durable.”
Joz said Android foldables weren’t inspiring
When talking about apps and the software, Joz said that what they were seeing from others wasn’t “particularly inspiring”. Apple didn’t want the iPhone Duo’s main display to look like a blown-up iPhone display. As with the iPad at its debut 15+ years ago, Apple wanted apps built specifically for that screen size, not just blowing up the iPhone app to fit it.
Joz also said that “that’s why we went out of our way with iPad development, both internally and with our third parties. We didn’t want iPad to feel like a big phone, and that’s again exactly what Android tablets felt like. And the same thing applies here.”
The iPhone Duo pre-orders open next month, starting at $1,999. Apple is working with many app developers to prepare their apps for the iPhone Duo’s launch. We have already seen a number of popular apps updated for the iPhone Duo, like Netflix and Slack.
