So according to the rumors, Apple is working on bringing OLED displays to its MacBook Pros. But the question is, will it only be for one configuration or both? Turns out it could be both. According to a report from Omdia, the release date and display sizes of the new MacBook Ultra have been revealed.
New MacBook Ultra release date, display sizes revealed
According to the report, Apple will introduce OLED displays to both display sizes: the 14-inch model and the 16-inch model. The report refers to the laptop as the MacBook Pro. But based on a report last month, the company could actually refer to these models as the MacBook Ultra.
This is because in addition to the OLED display, the new MacBook Ultra could be released with touchscreen capabilities as well. It’s kind of funny how this turned out. For years, when Windows competitors were releasing touchscreen laptop hybrids, Apple said no. But fast forward to today, and Apple could be hopping on board the bandwagon.
Another interesting mention in the report is that it claims these laptops could launch in Q3 2026. It’s weird timing because Apple’s Q3 event is focused on its iPhones and Apple Watch. Laptop and iPad refreshes usually take place in the first half of the year, or the fourth quarter.
Plus, it’s worth noting that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that the OLED MacBook Ultra could actually be delayed to early 2027. And given Gurman’s stellar track record, there’s a good chance he might be right. The alternative reasoning is that Apple could launch MacBook Pros with OLED displays without touchscreen support. But we haven’t really heard anything on that front yet.
What can we expect?
In addition to an OLED and touchscreen capabilities, the MacBook Ultra could actually run a slightly tweaked version of macOS. This is to make accommodations for the touchscreen display. So, instead of users poking and prodding their screens at tiny icons, macOS could adapt to what the user is trying to do. This includes changing certain menu items and objects on the screen to be more touch-friendly.
Other than that, for the most part, it should still be a MacBook laptop that most users are familiar with. Take this report with a grain of salt, but if a Q3 launch is in the cards, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
