Apple could launch multiple iPhone Duos in the coming years. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch a larger iPhone Duo Max, a smaller iPhone Duo Mini, and a cheaper iPhone Duo SE. This would match their current iPhone lineup, to be quite honest.
The iPhone Duo is likely representing a foundation for Apple’s next product family. So we’ll have the regular slab-style iPhone in multiple flavors and then the iPhone Duo as the foldable, also in multiple flavors. This will really bloat their lineup, but it also helps explain why Apple has started to stagger the release dates for existing iPhones, with the iPhone 17 and Air being a no-show last week.
This would allow Apple to hit multiple price points and also offer different sizes for its foldable. Something it has pretty much perfected with the current iPhone lineup. So it’s no surprise to see Apple wanting to do this with the iPhone Duo as well.
Here’s why Apple opted for ‘Duo’ over other names like ‘Ultra’
For months, even years, leading up to the announcement of the iPhone Duo, the rumor mill was sure that it would be called ‘iPhone Ultra’. But only two days before the announcement, we started to see the name ‘iPhone Duo‘ running around. Which ended up being the name.
Gurman explained in his newsletter this week that Apple likely opted for ‘Duo’ because it follows the same three-letter naming convention as ‘Air’ and ‘Pro’. It also gives them room to add further additions like ‘Max’ or ‘SE’ in the future. Obviously, that would sound weird with ‘Ultra’ being in the mix. Could you imagine the ‘iPhone Ultra Max’?
The iPhone Duo is set to open for pre-orders on October 16 in over 70 countries and territories, with it shipping a week later on October 30.
