Apple has officially launched the long-awaited iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The new devices introduce major hardware steps forward, led by a mechanical variable aperture camera, a 2nm chip, an expanded cooling system, and deep software enhancements powered by iOS 27 and Siri AI.
Physical aperture control and professional camera tools
At the heart of both models is an improved 48MP Fusion Main camera with Apple’s first variable aperture mechanism. Six laser-cut blades smoothly shift between aperture settings to automatically adapt to lighting and depth of field. Photographers can also take manual control in the updated Camera app, adjusting aperture, shutter speed, white balance, or monitoring exposure via a real-time histogram.
Flanking the main sensor, the rear camera system retains a high-resolution 48MP ultrawide lens. This sensor is optimized for detailed macro shots and expansive landscapes. Plus, you’ll find a 48MP Telephoto periscope lens that delivers up to 5x optical zoom on the Pro and up to 10x on the Pro Max. On the front, a new 24MP FaceTime camera replaces the old 18MP sensor for sharper selfies and video calls.
Apple is opening an API so third-party developers can harness full aperture range controls in their own photography apps.
Computational photography gets a major bump. There’s an updated image processing pipeline, new grain and texture controls for Photographic Styles, and upgraded editing tools like Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an improved Clean Up feature. Video recording gains post-capture Cinematic mode adjustments at up to 60 fps, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse recording, and intelligent Audio Mix algorithms that isolate background music from vocals.
A20 Pro silicon, custom networking, and vapor cooling
Under the hood, the new A20 Pro chip is built on a cutting-edge 2-nanometer process. It features a 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators, a 7-core GPU that’s 40% faster than the A19 Pro, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. With 32 total cores and 50% more memory bandwidth, the chip doubles the AI processing capacity of its predecessor.
To sustain peak speeds during long gaming or editing sessions, Apple redesigned the internal thermals. The A20 Pro uses M-series style packaging that places the memory die alongside the processor, attaching directly to a new vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro for a 40% boost in sustained performance. Connectivity is handled by two custom chips: the N1 for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, and the C2 cellular modem, which improves upload speeds, cuts power draw by 15%, and supports U.S. mmWave 5G bands.
Redesigned Dynamic Island, iOS 27, and extended battery life
On the front, a redesigned display layout shrinks the Dynamic Island, freeing up space to show up to three Live Activities simultaneously alongside Face ID hardware. Battery performance gets a massive leap as well. Models in eSIM-only markets—including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE—use the space previously occupied by physical SIM trays to pack larger batteries, delivering up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max. Fast charging hits 50% capacity in 15 minutes wired or 30 minutes wirelessly.
On the software front, iOS 27 introduces Siri AI in beta. The assistant leverages on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to handle contextual requests across messages, emails, photos, and live screen content. Image Playground adds photorealistic generation, while Safari gains a “Notify Me” tool to monitor product restocks or price changes. Additionally, Apple extended its free satellite feature access for another year for existing iPhone 14 through iPhone 16 users.
Pricing and availability
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities across four finishes: black, silver, glacier, and an all-new burgundy. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12, with official retail availability starting Friday, September 18.
Pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 (or $49.95 per month), while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299 (or $54.12 per month). Customers in the U.S. can also access flexible 12- or 24-month payment terms through the Klarna-powered Apple Upgrade leasing program starting at $34.99 per month.
