Remember when smartphones first came out and they had displays measuring 3.5 inches? These days, anything below 6 inches is considered small, and it looks like Apple is bringing that form factor back. In a series of images and videos shared by Vadim Yuryev on X, we’re getting a brief hands-on look at the design of the upcoming iPhone Ultra with its size compared to the iPhone 18 Pro.
iPhone Ultra design: Size compared to the iPhone 18 Pro
For those unfamiliar, the iPhone Ultra is the rumored name that Apple plans to use for its foldable iPhone. In the photos, it compares the phone alongside the alleged iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. In a way, it’s almost comical how small the iPhone Ultra design is compared to the rest of the lineup.
Just in case you haven’t followed the rumors, the iPhone Ultra is said to sport a cover display that measures 5.3-inches to 5.5-inches. It seems like an odd choice, but there’s a reason for it. Apple isn’t aiming to create a foldable like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series that opens up to more like a square-ish shape. Instead, the company wants a foldable that unfolds into an actual tablet.
By adopting a smaller cover display, it allows Apple to include a 7.8-inch foldable display with a near-4:3 aspect ratio. This is a smart play. Apple’s ecosystem already has apps designed for the iPhone and iPad. Introducing a new aspect ratio means developers need to update and tweak their apps. Using a display that has a more “traditional” aspect ratio will make it easier for everyone.
What else do we know?
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen dummy units of the iPhone Ultra. However, these new photos and videos reveal additional details. This includes a side-mounted cutout, which is presumably where Touch ID will sit. There’s also your usual sleep/wake button, and what’s interesting are the volume rockers.
Volume rockers are usually placed on the side of the phone. But in this case, Apple has opted to place it on the top. However, we suppose it depends on how you look at it. The iPad also has “top”-mounted volume buttons, but that’s only if you hold it in landscape orientation. In any case, we expect Apple will make the device official in the coming months. The iPhone Ultra will launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max this coming September. That is also when John Ternus will officially assume his role as Apple CEO.
