It seems that the iPhone Ultra is facing some design issues, which could cause a potential delay. According to a post on Weibo by tech tipster Instant Digital, Apple has run into issues with the iPhone Ultra’s design and that this could cause the phone to be “indefinitely delayed.”
iPhone Ultra design could cause delay
So, what’s the issue here? Some of you might think it could be the display, because from what we know, Apple has been chasing a crease-free display. However, it turns out it might not be the display causing the issue. Instead, the delay could be caused by the design of the hinge of the iPhone Ultra.
The post claims that the reliability of the hinge, especially after multiple openings and closings, isn’t meeting Apple’s quality control standards. The company is seeking a “perfect solution” to this issue. If Apple fails to find it, then the phone could be delayed indefinitely. It is unclear what exactly is wrong with the hinge, but it’s not surprising that Apple wants to get it right.
The phone lives and dies by its hinge
Yes, the foldable screen itself is important. However, we would argue that the hinge is just as important. We’ve seen this happen when Samsung first launched its first-ever foldable. Reviewers were quick to notice how the hinge failed when dust or debris got inside, which in turn could cause damage to the display if you tried to force it shut.
However, that was almost a decade ago. Back then, you could excuse it as growing pains of the technology. But now that Apple is coming in so late, it would be almost embarrassing if they failed to get it right. Also, this is Apple’s first-ever foldable. Considering the rumored price tag, it would be absolutely humiliating if they failed to deliver a phone that works properly.
Let’s not forget that the rumored September launch is also when Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, is stepping in. Having a flop on his hands right out of the gate is simply not a good look. We’re not sure how long Apple will take to fix this issue. We’re also still a few months away from September, so hopefully Apple will come up with a solution by then.
