Here we go again. A new rumor out of Weibo claims that Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone, expected in 2027, will finally bring solid-state buttons to the iPhone. The leaker, Instant Digital, says these buttons will use haptic feedback and sit on the curved-glass edges of what’s shaping up to be Apple’s most ambitious iPhone in years. And honestly? I’ll believe it when I see it.
If that rumor sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve heard it before. Solid-state buttons were rumored for the iPhone 15 Pro back in 2023, and that obviously never happened.
They’ve been floated again basically every year since. This is the kind of rumor that just won’t die, and at this point, I’m not sure if that’s because Apple is genuinely working on it or because leakers know it will get attention.
What Solid-State Buttons Would Actually Mean
For those who haven’t been following the saga, solid-state buttons don’t physically move. They detect pressure changes when you press on the device’s edge and use haptic feedback to simulate a click. The big advantage is design: Apple could build an iPhone with completely seamless edges, no gaps, no moving parts. That fits perfectly with rumors of an all-glass, curved-design 20th-anniversary iPhone.
According to the leak, Apple is testing these buttons in a bunch of real-world scenarios, including with gloves on, wet hands, extreme temperatures, and through cases. There’s also supposedly an ultra-low power chip that lets the buttons work even when the phone is off. That’s all great in theory, but it’s also exactly the kind of detail that gets repeated from leak to leak without anyone actually verifying it.
The rest of the rumor list includes under-display Face ID, an under-display front camera, a 6,000mAh battery, reverse wireless charging, and “Ceramic Shield Ultra” glass. The leaker even admits that the last name is made up. That tells you about how seriously to take this whole thing. We’ve got two more years until the anniversary iPhone is supposedly real, so plenty of time for these rumors to keep recycling.
