As expected, Apple will announce the Apple Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4 at the iPhone event on September 9. In his PowerOn newsletter, published on Bloomberg over the weekend, Gurman noted that this would happen.
Gurman also noted that Touch ID will not be coming to the Apple Watch this year, after a few initial rumors had suggested it. He also noted that he does not expect to see any major design changes compared to the current Apple Watch models that are available. He does expect to see a ceramic case option return for the Apple Watch Series 12.
Apple has apparently tested the Series 12 in both white and dark gray ceramic case options, like those offered for the highest-end Apple Watch Series 3 back in 2017.
Instead of major design changes, Gurman expects incremental changes, such as faster performance and improvements to health and fitness tracking. These new watches are expected to get the S11 chip this time around, instead of sticking with the S10 for a third-generation. This is needed so it can compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite that is available on Android watches now.
New Apple Watches could feature continuous heart rate data
Gurman mentioned that one of the features Apple has been testing is a new heart-rate sensor that would continuously collect data throughout the day. Right now, the Apple Watch only reads your heart rate about every five minutes, while watches like the Pixel Watch 5 collect it once every second, which makes it more accurate.
He also mentioned that Apple is revamping the Health and Fitness apps to show more wellness-related metrics “in a similar fashion to increasingly popular app offerings from Whoop and Oura.”
Gurman also mentioned that he does not expect to see an Apple Watch SE 4 launching this year.
