Apple is gearing up for its annual WWDC keynote on June 8. The tech giant will officially pull back the curtain on iOS 27 during the event. There’s also a massive artificial intelligence overhaul for Siri as one of the most anticipated announcements. However, it seems it will come in a way that many did not expect. A new report claims Apple is seriously considering launching its AI-powered Siri assistant upgrade (with Gemini brain) under a public “beta” label, despite the project already running two years behind its original internal schedule.
Why Apple plans to call its new core Siri a “beta”
The decision to use a beta tag is related to notable engineering hurdles Apple is currently navigating behind the scenes, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports. Internal testers working with early builds of iOS 27 have raised significant concerns regarding the accuracy of the new Large Language Model (LLM) driving the assistant.
The beta gives the company a strategic buffer against early user frustration. If the assistant hallucinates or struggles with processing lag, the tag acts as a “safety net” for corporate reputation.
An open ecosystem for intelligence
Part of the reason the upgrade feels like a work in progress is how it handles complex queries. Rather than processing everything natively, Siri will act as a central interface that routes heavy intelligence requests to third-party models. iOS 27 will introduce a specialized AI choice menu, allowing users to choose exactly which external engine, including Google Gemini, handles deep creative writing or image generation tasks.
Interestingly, Apple is building an emergency escape hatch directly into the system settings. Current development versions of iOS 27 feature a dedicated toggle that allows users to opt out of the advanced AI assistant entirely. Flipping this switch instantly reverts the system back to the legacy, command-based Siri.
A brand-new interface and dynamic features
Even with the provisional status, the incoming software represents the most radical redesign since the assistant’s inception. For the first time, Siri will step out of the shadows and inhabit a dedicated, standalone chatbot app. This interface supports persistent, conversational text history and includes a temporary chat feature that auto-deletes conversations to preserve user privacy.
Visually, the tool is getting a complete integration with the Dynamic Island. Instead of interrupting your active screen, invoking the assistant will expand directly from the top pill. This will reveal a clean typing bar and a glowing cursor that blends smoothly into your workflow.
The upgrade also brings a special “Siri Mode” in the native Camera app. This integration relocates Apple’s Visual Intelligence features directly into the camera viewfinder. It allows the assistant to read menus, translate signs, and identify real-world objects in real time.
Lastly, the update will introduce Genmoji blending and automated photo tools like “Extend” and “Reframe.”
