Whenever Apple releases its major iOS updates, it isn’t just all about new features. Instead, the company usually bundles things like bug fixes, closes security flaws, and introduces various improvements across the board. However, in response to AI cybersecurity concerns, Apple says it is releasing some of these updates earlier than usual.
Apple pushes out early updates over AI cybersecurity concerns
Speaking to Reuters, Apple confirmed it is releasing AI security updates earlier than normal. The company says that these updates would have previously been part of its new version of iOS. However, due to AI security concerns, the company decided to push them out ahead of schedule.
However, it should be noted that this doesn’t mean that Apple devices are in danger. There has not been any evidence that there are vulnerabilities that were being taken advantage of. But at the same time, we shouldn’t be lax when it comes to our smartphone security. Especially since we keep our digital lives on it and it contains a lot of sensitive data.
Apple’s change in pace also highlights new security concerns ever since AI hit the mainstream. Thanks to AI, people who could not code before are suddenly churning out apps. While most AI models weren’t designed to be used maliciously, it seems some people have figured out a way to use AI to speed up the development of malicious hacking tools.
This means that companies like Apple can no longer rely on traditional release windows. Instead, companies will need to be more nimble and adapt their security patches to the current landscape.
iOS 27 coming later this year
That being said, Apple’s next major iOS update, iOS 27, is expected to be released in the coming months. In the past, Apple has tied its release close to the sale of its latest flagship phones. This means we should be able to look forward to the update’s release this coming September.
iOS 27 is bringing a lot of changes and improvements to the table. However, the main highlight is the revamped Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, which was built using a custom Google Gemini model. We’ve yet to try it for ourselves, but so far, Apple’s own hands-on demos look impressive.
Will it be good enough to let Apple catch up to its competitors? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, if you see an update waiting for you in iOS, you might want to go ahead and update your device.
