Apple is working on a major upgrade for its built-in photo editing tools. The goal is to better compete with the latest Android flagships. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will integrate its Apple Intelligence platform directly into the Photos app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, revamping image editing in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 using AI.
Apple’s current tools let you make simple changes like tweaking the brightness and adding some filters, among others. However, the company wants to integrate new features capable of complex editing. In the end, this should reduce the need for third-party applications.
Apple’s plan to bring pro AI editing to every iPhone from iOS 27
The leaked details suggest that Apple is focusing on three specific capabilities: extending, enhancing, and reframing. The extension tool will likely use generative AI to “fill in” the edges of a photo. This seems perfect for shots where you missed part of the background. Meanwhile, the reframing feature will allow users to adjust the composition and perspective of a picture after they have already taken it.
The report also mentions a focus on efficiency. Sources familiar with the project indicate that these AI models run directly on the device. This means the processing typically takes only a few seconds while keeping a private experience. This has been the firm’s approach with Apple Intelligence, and it doesn’t seem like it will change anytime soon.
Closing the gap with Android
It is no secret that Google and Samsung have taken the lead in the AI editing race. Apple hopes its new AI image editing features will simplify the user experience and help close the functional gap. Users will be able to recover details in blurry shots or fix a poorly cropped image without leaving your photo library.
The timing of the report aligns with the company’s broader AI strategy for 2026. The company is also tuning a big AI Siri revamp with a Gemini brain that will offer a more natural conversational experience.
