Thanks to AI, users with almost zero knowledge of coding or app development can “vibe code” apps into existence with a few prompts. Unfortunately, Apple has essentially restricted such apps from its App Store. But it seems that behind the scenes, Apple is thinking of how to allow agentic AI into its App Store without disrupting the infrastructure it has built.
Apple considering allowing agentic AI into the App Store
For those unfamiliar, agentic AI is a type of AI that can perform tasks for users. Right now, the AI models we are familiar with are a more reactive type of models. This means that you ask it a question, it responds. Agentic AI is more proactive. For example, you can ask it to search for the cheapest flights and hotels and book it on your behalf.
It sounds like a natural evolution in technology, but according to a report from The Information, there are concerns from Apple. For Apple, allowing agentic AI into the App Store could pose some issues. The App Store has a very strict set of rules and guidelines developers have to follow. There is concern that eventually, agentic AI could be prompted in such a way that deviates from those rules or does things that are detrimental to the user.
A good example would be OpenClaw, which in concept is pretty amazing. However, there have been a few documented mishaps where agents can go haywire and delete all of a user’s emails. Also, as we’ve seen from past reports, apps made from vibe coding seem to have a bunch of security vulnerabilities in them.
AI could upend app stores as we know them
That being said, Apple is at a crossroads. Its own attempts at creating its own AI have flopped. The company is planning to launch a revamped Siri soon, but we’ll have to wait and see if it actually delivers or if it’s going to be yet another failure for the history books.
However, the way AI is going right now, Apple has to adapt and adopt. We’ve seen what happened to companies that failed to embrace the smartphone trend. Apple definitely does not want to go down that path. Plus, agentic AI or AI in general makes a lot of sense.
Imagine being able to use the AI to create an app on the spot for very specific needs. This saves users time from hopping from app to app, or trying to find an app that caters to their needs. According to Igor Naverniouk, who worked on Siri at Apple until last year, he called the concept the “holy grail.”
“Whoever does it will win. Just think of the billions being spent on app stores. Wouldn’t it be cool to just ask your phone to do whatever you want it to do and never install apps? That’s the hope.”
