When the platform first debuted, it required a dedicated Windows or macOS desktop application to function. This update transforms the service into a cross-device ecosystem. The rollout begins in beta for top-tier Max subscribers, with plans to trickle down to standard tiers over the coming weeks.
True background automation
The standout upgrade in this release is the shift to cloud processing by default. Previously, if your computer went to sleep, your assistant stopped working. Now, tasks run entirely in the cloud. You can kick off a data-heavy research project at your desk, close your laptop, head out the door, and track the progress straight from your phone.

Deep work involving local file directories and browser control still requires the desktop app. However, the mobile and web versions completely unify standard chatbot conversations with background automation.

The launch aligns with a broader trend in Silicon Valley. Major names are racing to move AI out of standalone chat boxes and into active operational surfaces. The shift picked up massive momentum early this year following the viral success of OpenClaw, a homebrew agent that captured the spotlight by letting users control tasks through text messages. Tech giants have been playing catch-up ever since, with rivals like OpenAI pushing similar mobile workflows for its Codex platform.
Alongside the software rollout, Anthropic published aggregated usage statistics from 1.2 million Cowork sessions across 600,000 organizations. The data reveals that despite the heavy emphasis on coding tools in tech circles, everyday white-collar workers are actually driving adoption.
Software development accounted for less than 9% of total usage. Instead, the largest chunk of activity involved basic business operations like building onboarding checklists, compiling scattered updates into single reports, and managing spreadsheets. Content creation, copywriting, and building presentation decks followed closely behind. Essentially, people are using the tool to offload the repetitive administrative tasks that clog up the average workday.
