After a long wait, Google rolled out Gemini for Android Auto widely earlier this month. Even though it was announced back in November last year. Now that it’s finally here, things don’t seem to be going smoothly. It seems that a weird Android Auto bug is randomly replacing Gemini with Google Assistant.
Android Auto bug is reportedly replacing Gemini with Google Assistant
Multiple users have been complaining about this unusual behavior on Reddit and the Android Auto support forum. The earliest mention of the bug dates back to last week. A Pixel 9 Pro XL user shared their experience, where Gemini was working properly as their in-car assistant before the Android Auto v16.7 update. But after that, Gemini was replaced with Google Assistant. This is despite Gemini being the default assistant on the phone.Â
The user apparently did some troubleshooting steps, like clearing the cache for Android Auto and the Google app, and restarting both the phone and the car head unit. None of these steps seems to have fixed the issue. While some users link it to Android Auto v16.7, others say they’ve noticed it on Android Auto v16.6.661414. This suggests it may not be limited to one exact version.

The Android Auto team acknowledged the bug
There are similar complaints from users even on Reddit. According to one user, the glitch doesn’t seem to last for long and can randomly switch back to Gemini after a few hours. This can be frustrating. On the Android Auto support forum, one user believes that switching Gemini to Google Assistant and then back to Gemini again may help fix the glitch. You can give this a go by heading to Manage your digital assistant in Android Auto settings and tapping Digital assistant from Google.Â
Going by the reactions to these posts, it seems to be a widespread issue. Well, the good news is that the Android Auto team acknowledged the bug earlier this week. This signals that a fix might be coming soon.Â
