Many Android brands offer countless customization options for their devices. However, historically, Google has opted for a more conservative approach for its Pixel devices. For years, the “At a Glance” widget was mandatory on every user’s home screen. There’s another item that, even today, remains unremovable: the Google search bar. Fortunately, after allowing users to get rid of “At a Glance,” Google’s next step on Android 17 would be to allow users to remove the bottom search bar from their Pixel phone’s home screen.
Google tests a toggle to hide Pixel’s home screen search bar on Android 17
Findings from Android Authority point to a major shift in the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2 build. Hidden within the code are specific strings like “Show search bar” and “Search bar settings.” These indicate that Google is working on a simple toggle that will allow you to hide the search bar entirely.

Plus, tipster Mystic Leaks shared a video showing how you will be able to remove the bottom search bar. There’s also an early look at the new options to customize it.
This is a huge deal for anyone who uses an alternative search engine or simply finds the bar redundant. After all, the app drawer already has its own powerful search function.
This change doesn’t come alone. Earlier versions of the Android 17 beta already introduced the ability to hide the “At a Glance” widget. This widget is incredibly useful for some—showing weather, flight info, and even earthquake alerts—but for others, it’s just clutter.
When can we expect it?
While these features are currently visible in beta builds, we have to keep our expectations in check. Google has a history of testing features in early versions and then pulling them before the final release. However, given the persistence of these requests from the community, it feels like the right time for Google to follow through.
If everything stays on track, this “clean” home screen experience should arrive as part of the September Pixel Feature Drop. It’s a long wait, but for those who have wanted to reclaim their home screen for years, it’s a small price to pay for a much-needed bit of freedom.
