Carrier giant T-Mobile has been consistently laying off workers across the US. The layoffs even affected manager and director roles, as the company aims to become more efficient. In fact, the company has reportedly started shutting down retail stores. Amidst the US layoffs, T-Mobile has now opened a new global capability center (GCC) in India.
T-Mobile plans to hire 1,000 employees in India by 2027
While AI took away some of the jobs in the US layoffs, it seems others are simply being offshored to India through the new T-Mobile GCC (global capability center). It was launched on June 4th and is situated in the city of Hyderabad, capital of Telangana. The center spans 250,000 square feet. As per Reuters, the company plans to hire around 1,000 employees by 2027 in the region.
“Our global technology centre in Hyderabad will play an important role in strengthening our engineering and digital capabilities while enabling teams to build solutions that support our customers and business priorities,” said Chandra Gupta, TMUS Global Solutions VP of IT operations.
The Indian government says GCCs in the country have evolved into local hubs for global companies, supporting a wide range of business functions. The Indian unit of T-Mobile will be responsible for tasks like software engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, product development, and data analysis.
This comes after US layoffs
As a refresher, T-Mobile began laying off employees in late 2025 and continued trimming roles into 2026. While it had 70,000 employees at the end of 2024, a more recent figure isn’t available. Some of the layoffs reportedly came from the acquisition of UScellular, which led to overlapping corporate jobs. Online reports point out that cuts hit various departments, with sales staff hit the hardest. However, the company, in January, said it was still hiring, adding that the structural changes are to support future growth.
On the sidelines, the company reportedly started shutting down its retail locations. This aligns with its goal of having fewer stores in the future. It’s actively working on encouraging users to use the T-Life app instead of visiting stores or reaching out to customer care. Considering all this, it looks like T-Mobile is trying to benefit monetarily by hiring employees in India instead of the US.
