AMD is coming to Computex 2026 with some pretty big announcements but what might be the most well-received by gamers is the confirmation that AMD is extending support for some of its hardware. At the event, AMD announced it would be extending support for the AMD Socket AM5 platform through 2029. This is bound to be a big deal for any gamers that are using hardware based on this platform.
Mainly because it means they won’t have to worry about replacing that hardware as soon because of support ending. While it doesn’t do much in the way of hardware failures or other issues, continued support means gamers can expect AMD to provide firmware updates that help keep those components up to date and more secure. Perhaps there will even be a new feature or two on the way. The most important part is that this extended support is a commitment to long-term use of the hardware. With the memory crisis still in full swing prices on all types of components have gone up. It’s a hefty investment compared to just a few years ago. So it’s all the better when you get to keep some of those components for longer.
Computex 2026 is all about longevity for AMD
While AMD isn’t really announcing many new chips for gamers to salivate over, that doesn’t mean AMD’s announcements aren’t exciting. For instance, AMD is confirming the regional expansion of the Radeon RX 9070 GRE. Longevity in the gaming space is also nothing to scoff at because it’s starting to become an expensive hobby. A luxury that soon enough, some people won’t be able to afford.
With that in mind, the longer you can continue to use your current setup, the better. Even if you end up having to upgrade something over the course of that time, AMD’s methods with AM4 and AM5 have essentially ensured gamers have a platform that can be upgraded over time. And not a requirement to upgrade all at once.
AMD is announcing one new chip, at least: the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D. Building off of its commitment to extending the lifespan of its platforms, this new processor runs on the AM5 platform and features AMD 3D V-Cache technology. This chip will come with a lower price tag than previous chips with this technology, making it more accessible to more gamers. It comes with 8 cores and a complete cache of 104MB. Additionally, it has a boost clock speed of up to 4.5GHz. AMD says this chip will be available on July 16, and it’ll retail for $329.
