AI is changing our lives. In some cases, it’s for the better. Certain types of work can now be done more efficiently and potentially more accurately, such as research or understanding complex topics. But there’s always a downside to everything. In this case, data centers powering AI and crypto mining could lead to a rise in power costs.
Power costs could rise no thanks to data centers
As AI becomes more mainstream, there is an increased demand for data centers to help keep these AI models up and running and processing all our queries. Data centers have existed long before AI, but because of how much processing power AI demands along with crypto mining, companies need to expand.
So much so that according to research by Jeremiah X. Johnson, published in Environmental Research Letters, the demand for more data centers could lead to a rise in costs of power. They have estimated that in more extreme regional cases, wholesale electricity costs could increase by as much as 57% by the end of the decade in the US.
But what can we do to help lower these costs? According to researchers, they suggest that companies spread out their data centers. Right now, data centers tend to be built in specific regions. This is due to environmental and infrastructure reasons. Such as grid connection availability and cooling.Â
However, the researchers believe that spreading these data centers out could help eliminate regional price hikes. Of course, whether or not companies care to do that remains to be seen.
The rise of data centers
Like we said, we’re seeing an increase in demand for data centers. Not too long ago, Google and SpaceX were reportedly in discussions. Both companies are considering a partnership that could put AI data centers in space. This could potentially help take some of the load off local power grids.
However, that feels more like something that could happen in the future. But what about the here and now? Many are already questioning the impact of these data centers. Back in April, investors were pressuring companies like Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft over the environmental impact of their data centers.
