A former researcher from Samsung Electronics has just been sentenced to seven years in prison for leaking semiconductor technology to a Chinese company. The Seoul Central District Court found the former Samsung employee guilty of violating the country’s Industrial Technology Protection Act.
This researcher was among 10 people who were indicted last year on suspicion of leaking memory chip manufacturing technology to the Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies. Which authorities have said helped pave the way for China’s development of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component for artificial intelligence computing.
According to sources within South Korea, the defendant leaked Samsung’s DRAM process. The defendant had left Samsung and moved over to ChangXin Memory Technology with another former Samsung employee. And he received around $1.96M over six years, in return for that information.
This just shows how stiff the competition is, in Southeast Asia
Competition between tech companies in Southeast Asia, particularly China and Korea, is quite stiff. As we can see here, a Samsung employee just got hit with seven years in prison for leaking confidential information to a competitor. And it’s not the first time this has happened either.
Just looking at Samsung, this has happened a ton over the last 20 years. Back in 2012, 11 people were arrested for leaking technology used to produce AMOLED displays to a Chinese display maker. There were a couple more OLED leaks to China in 2020 and 2023. To make things worse, this isn’t the first time that Samsung employees have leaked information to ChangXin Memory Technology. Back in 2023, a couple of employees handed over eight key process-related technologies to the company and were arrested.
This is why companies have to be super secretive about their products, especially when you’re a competitor as big as Samsung. Keep in mind, Samsung doesn’t just make smartphones. They make a lot of the components in smartphones, as well as TVs, home appliances, and in South Korea, they even make tanks.
