There are many reasons to dislike T-Mobile’s T-Life app. But if you’re looking for one more, this one’s a big one. According to a post on Reddit, someone is alleging that T-Mobile is selling data it got from the T-Life app.
T-Mobile allegedly selling data from T-Life app
According to the post by u/airsoftredditguy, they said, “I used to work at a media company they just purchased. They’re re-selling all of your data that they harness through the T-life app so I’d double check the permissions if you have it installed.”
Perhaps we should have seen this coming. Earlier this year, T-Mobile users discovered that that app refused to let them decline data-sharing permissions. When users tapped on decline, the message would keep popping up again and again until they basically gave in. It seems like T-Mobile has no regard for the privacy of its customers.
Now, some of you might argue that T-Mobile selling your data from the T-Life app is to be expected. After all, there are tons of other apps and services out there that do the same. Meta and Google come to mind. However, the main difference is the need for these apps. For instance, you could live without social media. You could also live without Google, even though that might be challenging, but still possible.
But for T-Mobile users, that’s impossible. This is because a recent report revealed the carrier’s plan to transition to T-Life completely. This means whether you like it or not, you have to use T-Life as long as you remain at T-Mobile.
Customers are leaving
So, with this bombshell piece of news, it’s not surprising that the comments are filled with customers claiming they are leaving or have already left. Whether or not this will have a huge impact on T-Mobile’s bottom line remains to be seen. However, given that the US carrier market is dominated by three major players, it doesn’t leave customers with a lot of good options.
But we suppose if you’d rather join a carrier that doesn’t force a data-collecting app on you, then maybe AT&T and Verizon are worth checking out.
