For the vast majority of the pickup truck’s existence, manual transmissions were synonymous with the segment. After all, pickups were primarily used as work vehicles up until just a couple of decades ago, and work vehicles need to be simple, reliable, and durable. Of course, manual transmissions are, largely, simpler and easier to fix and maintain than automatics, so pickup trucks utilizing the stick shift just made more sense at the time.
