Threads was a kind of extension of Instagram when it launched in 2023. However, over time, the reliance of Meta’s X rival platform on Instagram has waned. Now, Threads is getting its own DM inbox, meaning users can now message without needing any additional apps.
Threads has released its own DM inbox
Threads has introduced a private messaging feature for all users. This means that users can now message each other freely. Well, you no longer have to switch to Instagram to message someone.

Meta’s statement is as follows;
“Threads was created for sharing perspectives that generate vibrant, public conversations, but sometimes you want to take a conversation further, one-on-one. Messaging has been one of the top requested features, and now, you can easily continue conversations in the app and deepen relationships with others.”
Threads’ new DM feature comes with the same basic elements found on other social media platforms. For instance, you can chat with users one-on-one, send emojis, and report spam. However, features like group messaging and inbox filters will be added in the future.
However, there are some details to consider. To start, the platform only allows DMs between your Threads followers or mutual followers from Instagram.
To send a message on Threads, simply click the new envelope icon in the toolbar on the home screen. This will take you to your inbox, where you can create a message by tapping the pencil icon in the upper right corner.
Threads currently offers the feature on its Android, iOS, and web versions, but only to users over the age of 18.
There’s another update for Threads
Meta has announced another new feature for Threads: Highlighter, which the company says will “amplify and highlight unique perspectives that spark thoughtful conversations.
This will highlight trending topics in sections like “For You.” Meta also says the feature will expand to other parts of the app in the future.
