Bose headphones usually show up in airport lounges, while Skullcandy earbuds belong in skateparks, but those two worlds just officially crossed paths. Bose announced that it bought Skullcandy, pulling the Utah-based streetwear brand into its consumer audio lineup. Instead of ditching the Skullcandy name, Bose is keeping it around as a separate brand to connect with younger listeners who would never drop $400 on executive travel gear.
Building on a real-world tech partnership
This buyout builds on a licensing partnership the two companies kicked off last year. Under the “Sound by Bose” program, Skullcandy began packing Bose spatial audio and active noise cancellation into products like the Method 360 ANC earbuds and Crusher 1080 ANC headphones. In a review by WIRED, headphone testers noted that adding Bose engineering gave Skullcandy’s budget hardware a massive boost in overall sound quality without blowing out the price.
Reaching skate culture and budget listeners
While Bose built its reputation on noise-canceling headsets for business travelers, Skullcandy made a name for itself around board sports and street culture. Speaking with WIRED, Bose CEO Lila Snyder explained that Skullcandy gives them a direct line to a crowd traditional Bose gear completely misses. Skullcandy CEO Brian Garofalow called the move a win for fans, noting that combining Bose audio engineering with Skullcandy’s board sports background will make budget gear sound way better.
Buying Skullcandy is just the latest move in a massive lineup of acquisitions for Bose over recent years. The company snapped up luxury audio makers McIntosh and Sonus faber back in 2024, alongside tech firms like StreamUnlimited and Firelight Technologies. Bose even launched its own content studio called Bose Studios and an independent record label, showing how far the brand wants to reach beyond plain hardware.
Utah operations, pricing, and financial details
According to the company, Skullcandy will stay rooted in Park City, Utah, keeping its team right in the heart of board sports culture. Neither company revealed the financial terms or final price tag of the deal. However, Skullcandy products will stay significantly cheaper than standard Bose gear, giving everyday buyers access to top-tier noise cancellation without paying executive prices.
