Samsung is preparing a big upgrade for its mobile connectivity tech, and it involves a jump to next-generation chip architecture. The Korean giant is setting its sights on 2nm modems for future Galaxy flagships like the Galaxy S28, aiming to boost efficiency while making room for its growing AI ambitions.
Moving the M2800 modem to a 2nm node
According to South Korean outlet The Elec, Samsung’s System LSI division selected an advanced 2nm manufacturing process for its upcoming M2800 external 5G modem. Development is scheduled to wrap up in 2027, setting the chip up to debut alongside the Exynos 2800 in the Galaxy S28 series in 2028.
Shifting future modems to a 2nm node offers advantages that go far beyond phone download speeds or thermal management. Moving external modems off 4nm manufacturing lines clears out critical factory capacity at Samsung Foundry.
Samsung plans to redirect those freed-up 4nm lines toward producing base dies for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips. These foundational layers are key to AI accelerators, allowing Samsung to address the huge global demand for AI server hardware.
Refinements and optical shrinks for the Galaxy S27
Before the 2nm leap happens, Samsung is refining its existing 4nm tech for the Galaxy S27 lineup in early 2027. The M2700 modem will pair with the Exynos 2700 in global versions of the Galaxy S27, S27+, and S27 Pro. On the other hand, the S27 Ultra will continue to use Snapdragon chips worldwide.
To squeeze better efficiency out of the M2700 without moving to a new node, engineers applied an optical shrink technique. Scaling down the physical design mask reduces the chip’s footprint by about four percent without altering the underlying manufacturing setup.
Standby battery fixes and retiring the Shannon brand
Samsung also overhauled software and voltage controls to resolve persistent standby battery complaints. The older Shannon 5410 modem in Exynos 2600-powered Galaxy S26 models suffered from heavy power drain on standby when measured against Snapdragon competitors.
Internal testing by Samsung’s Mobile Experience division showed that the M2700 solved those standby battery issues after fine-tuning voltage levels. Alongside efficiency fixes, the updated modem adopts 3GPP Release 18 standards, improves satellite Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) features, and replaces the Shannon brand name with the new M-series label.
